Derreck Keopanya

I’m the founder of Optimal Beyond Functional (OBF) and hold a B.Sc. in Kinesiology Exercise Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. After graduating, I earned my Corrective Exercise Specialist certification from the American Council on Exercise. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist. In my free time, I love to find new music and play men’s volleyball.

Growing up, I helped my own mother deal with a herniated disc, which sparked my passion for understanding how to make the body stronger. This experience gave me a soft spot for anyone dealing with persistent discomfort, leading me to help people from all walks of life — from gastroenterologist surgeons and registered nurses to directors and construction workers — by addressing the root causes of their pain.

I created OBF because I wanted people to feel heard, no matter how long they’ve been dealing with their issues. I believe in looking at the whole person and collaborating with clients to find sustainable solutions. As I often say, “The basics do not change.”

Whether your goal is to build a bigger butt, eliminate hip or back pain, increase your walking endurance, or improve strength and athleticism, I believe the key is a sustainable, individualized approach. There’s no shame in having a goal or a problem; the only shame is believing you can’t be helped. I invite you to come see another perspective.
